Brazilian Police Bust $196 Million Cocaine and Cryptocurrency Money Laundering Ring

According to Bitcoin.com, the Brazilian Federal Police announced that "Operation Commodity" successfully cracked down on a transnational drug trafficking and money laundering group. Since 2021, the gang has smuggled over 6.5 tons of cocaine to European countries such as France, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, and Spain through the Port of Rio de Janeiro, hiding the drugs in coffee, cement, and mortar cargo. The gang conducted money laundering activities through a luxury car dealer in the Greater São Paulo area dealing in Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, and Land Rover, as well as multiple shell companies, using cryptocurrency as a tool to conceal and obfuscate fund flows. The operation resulted in 13 arrests and the execution of 44 search warrants, with the court ordering the freezing of assets worth nearly 1 billion reais (approximately $196 million). The gang is linked to the Brazilian criminal groups PCC and CV, which were listed as "Global Specially Designated Terrorist Organizations" by the US Trump administration.
