The primary saw a cryptocurrency-backed political action committee (PAC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.btcethdata.com\/\">spending more than $2 million<\/a> on media in an attempt to re-elect Thanedar, who has voted in favor of many bills favoring the industry while in Congress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-images.ctmedia.io\/media\/content\/screenshot-2026-08-05-at-103437-am.png\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Election results for Democratic primary in Michigan\u2019s 13th congressional district. During the campaign, he accused the crypto industry of \u201cpaying my opponent back for helping Trump make over $1 billion since taking office,\u201d likely referring to Thanedar\u2019s voting record.<\/p>\n<p>Protect Progress, the super PAC responsible for funding the ads supporting Thanedar and opposing McKinney, is affiliated with Fairshake, a group backed primarily by crypto companies Coinbase and Ripple. After spending more than $170 million in the 2024 US election cycle on similar races involving pro- and anti-crypto candidates, Fairshake and its affiliates have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.btcethdata.com\/\">poured additional millions of dollars into media for politicians<\/a> in this year\u2019s primaries in several US states ahead of the November general election.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.btcethdata.com\/\"><em><strong>Nigel Farage to resign from UK Parliament amid crypto \u201cgift\u201d scandal, will stand in by-election<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to voting for bills like the GENIUS Act and CLARITY Act in the House of Representatives, Thanedar also reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/07\/17\/shri-thanedar-crypto-donavan-mckinney-michigan-aipac\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost<\/a> more than $600,000 in the second quarter of 2026 after investing $3.7 million of campaign funds into crypto companies. <\/p>\n<p>\u201dWashington has spent too long serving billionaires and corporate interests,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DonavanMI13\/status\/2085035880931041709\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> McKinney in a Wednesday X post. \u201dI will always only serve the people I represent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McKinney will face off against Republican candidate Taras Nykoriak in the November election. Cointelegraph sought a comment from McKinney\u2019s campaign on Wednesday but did not receive an immediate response.<\/p>\n<h2>PAC-supported candidate wins Washington primary<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to Protect Progress\u2019 efforts in Michigan, the Fairshake affiliate Defend American Jobs spent more than $65,000 on media to support Republican Amanda McKinney (no relation to the Michigan candidate) in Washington\u2019s 4th congressional district.
