Based on 2017 Bureau of Justice Statistics survey data, the CFA extrapolated unreported losses using a 7.1x multiplier. Investment fraud was the largest single category, with estimated losses reaching $61.4 billion, a year-on-year increase of 32%; losses were particularly severe for the group aged 60 and above, with losses from crypto fraud alone reaching $4.4 billion.
