{"id":834,"date":"2026-08-04T15:25:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T07:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.btcethdata.com\/?btc_ct_news=nigeria-sets-crypto-tax-collection-rules-for-digital-asset-platforms"},"modified":"2026-08-04T17:10:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T09:10:47","slug":"nigeria-sets-crypto-tax-collection-rules-for-digital-asset-platforms","status":"publish","type":"btc_ct_news","link":"https:\/\/www.btcethdata.com\/?btc_ct_news=nigeria-sets-crypto-tax-collection-rules-for-digital-asset-platforms","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria sets crypto tax collection rules for digital asset platforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria\u2019s revenue agency has issued rules requiring crypto platforms and peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplaces to collect, report and remit taxes, including paying some withheld amounts in digital tokens.<\/p>\n<p>In its Guidelines on Taxation of Virtual Assets, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrs.gov.ng\/uploads\/Guidelines_on_taxation_of_Virtual_Assets_31_7_26_7cd2ef8dab.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> income tax deducted at source and stamp duty \u201cshall be remitted to the Service in the originating token of the transaction.\u201d Value-added tax, by contrast, must be remitted in the currency used for the payment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines place exchanges and P2P marketplaces at the center of withholding, reporting and remittance under the country\u2019s existing laws.<\/p>\n<p>Under the guidelines, platforms must withhold 1% of proceeds from taxable disposals of crypto assets, security tokens and applicable non-fungible tokens. A 10% withholding rate applies to staking, mining, airdrops and decentralized finance, while token-to-fiat and fiat-to-token transfers are subject to a 1.5% stamp duty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The withheld amounts are advance payments credited against the taxpayer\u2019s final income tax liability. Individuals are taxed at progressive rates, while companies other than small companies face a 30% rate. Stablecoin sales are exempt from the 1% withholding tax.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Nigeria\u2019s crypto tax framework takes shape<\/h2>\n<p>The new guidelines follow an executive order signed by President Bola Tinubu that established a Virtual Asset Council chaired by the central bank, with the NRS and the Securities and Exchange Commission serving as vice chairs. On July 18, the presidency said that the NRS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.btcethdata.com\/\">would release a policy<\/a> to implement Nigeria\u2019s tax laws for virtual assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s broader tax overhaul took effect on Jan. 1 under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrs.gov.ng\/uploads\/NIGERIA_TAX_ACT_2025_ef6bb812a5.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nigeria Tax Act<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tat.gov.ng\/Nigeria-Tax-Act-2025.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nigeria Tax Administration Act of 2025<\/a>. The legislation treats digital assets as chargeable assets and requires virtual asset service providers to report transaction details, including customers\u2019 names, contact information and Tax Identification Numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.btcethdata.com\/\"><em><strong>South Africa proposes crypto tax guidance under existing framework<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nigeria first explicitly subjected gains from crypto disposals to tax through the Finance Act 2023, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.btcethdata.com\/\">imposed a flat 10% capital gains tax<\/a>.
